Comments: Complaint investigation. Discussed issue with manager. Explained that all open wounds on food service workers need to be covered properly and gloves should be worn along with any bandages, etc., for extra protection. She said she would discuss the issue with her staff and see if she could figure out which employee it was. No one there at the time of inspection had any cuts/open wounds on their hands or any exposed area.

Comments: Discussed complaint with manager on site. Same manager was notified by the health department of the incident yesterday, and reported it to her boss so they would be aware. No one within Dunkin Donuts had been notified of the complaint by anyone else. The iced coffee machine was checked, and they went through the process of how the iced coffee was made and how the machine is cleaned. Ice machine was checked, and both bins where ice is transferred to were also checked. Discussed the cleaning procedures with manager as well. Ice machine is emptied and cleaned weekly, and the ice bins are cleaned every 3 days. The iced coffee machine is cleaned every night. Observed an iced coffee being made with liquid sugar that made a “slimy looking” glob on the bottom of the cup before being served. The iced coffee the complainant mentioned did not have liquid sugar, but that was one option we thought could possibly result in the “gelatinous substance” they saw in their coffee. Nothing else we could think of would cause that kind of “gelatinous substance” in an iced coffee. Also discussed the stirring of drinks with spoons that are rinsed between every use and placed in a clean cup. Most iced coffees however are just shaken slightly and not stirred at all. Inspectors were unable to identify source of “alleged gelatinous substance.” Discussed that we will not be able to do anything further in regards to the complaint, given that any “food tampering” is taken care of by law enforcement. But, we told the manager if they need anything further from us we would be of as much assistance as possible. Cameras are in place throughout the entire facility, so nothing can be done without being caught on camera. Not that we have access to any tapes, but if law enforcement chooses to look at them, they would be able to see anything that could have happened to the iced coffee.

The assistant manager changed the set-up of all three spots, two with ice water and one with disposable spoons. Request area manager call to discuss this situation.
